About Us

The Department of Botany is established in the year 1976. Department offers a specialized B.Sc. program in Botany since its inception. Interdisciplinary subject plant protection is offered at B. Sc. I and II which is approved by the state government. Department is upgraded with M. Phil. and Ph. D. Program in 2014 and M. Sc. in 2019. The department has four recognized research guides. Number of research students are awarded with Ph.D. The department has well equipped laboratories with notable instruments like, Spectrophotometer, Laminar Air Flow, BOD Incubator, etc. The herbarium in the department is internationally recognized as NCK which contains more than 2000 herbaria.  The department has well established Botanical Garden with more than 250 species of lower and higher plants.

1. Seminar Programs:

• Department of Botany organizes seminars of B.Sc. students on various topics related to botany. These seminars provide a platform for students to learn about recent developments in plant science, herbal medicine, ecology, biodiversity, and conservation.
• Guest speakers from reputed Departments, academic and research institutions are often invited to share their knowledge, offering insights into current research trends and career opportunities in fields like Botany, environmental conservation, and research.

2. Field Work:

• Fieldwork is an integral part of the academic curriculum, particularly for life science and Botany students. It helps students gain hands-on experience in plant identification, ecological surveys, and biodiversity assessment.
• Students participate in excursions to nearby places, where they study the diversity of flora and conduct vegetation analysis.

3. Gardening Practices:

• Department of Botany promotes gardening and horticultural activities as part of its sustainable development goals. Gardening practices involve students cultivating medicinal and aromatic plants, ornamental species, and local varieties of herbs.
• The college has dedicated Botanical Garden, where students can learn gardening techniques, plant propagation methods, composting, and organic farming practices.
• Practical sessions on herbal medicine preparation and plant-based remedies are also conducted.
• The gardening practice fosters a sense of environmental responsibility, encouraging students to contribute to greening efforts both on-campus and within their local communities.

4. Wild-Vegetable Exhibition

The college hosts an annual Wild-Vegetable Exhibition that showcases the variety of edible wild plants found in the region. This event aims to:

• Promote the culinary and medicinal uses of wild vegetables.
• Raise awareness about local plant biodiversity and sustainable harvesting practices.
• Involve students and the local community in exhibitions of indigenous and lesser-known plant species.
• Encourage conservation efforts by educating the public about the importance of preserving wild flora.
