About Us

In the year June 1975, the conception of the Department of Physics took place under the able leadership of Prin..Dr. R. K. Kanabarkar sir. The first head of the department was Dr. B. P. Sabale  who commenced the basic Bachelor degree program in Physics  for the remote as well as city area students surrounded by the college.. The sole intention was to cater to the need for graduation in Physics for academic as well as industrial purpose. Later on Dr B. P. Sable became the Registrar of the Shiva University Kolhapur. After that the department has been successfully led by legends like Dr. J. K. Nandgawe, Dr. R. R. Hadgal, Dr. P. K. Patil , Dr. R. S. Patil and Dr. M. R. Shedam . Dr. P. K. Patil became the Principal of the ‘The New College, Kolhapur from 2010 to 2012. Still most of the professors are the authors of many text books published by reputed publishing houses like ‘Phadake’ and ‘Nirali Publications as per curriculum designed by the Shivaji University, Kolhapur.
In June 1980, the Astronomy and Astrophysics subject has been started under the able headship of Dr. J. K. Nandgawe sir. The department of Physics is the first department that started this subject among all colleges affiliated to Shivaji University, Kolhapur. In June 2021, Master Degree Program has been started in Physics with a specialization ‘Material Science’ under the able headship of Dr. P. D. Kamble. Since then several areas of Materials Science have been researched and taught in the department.
Apart from the academic program, research culture has been developed in the department since 2019. One of the students has been awarded his Ph. D degree from this department and eight students are working their Ph. D. work. The faculty from the department has published many research papers in Scopus indexed journals with high impact factor.
As of today, a large number of students are working in various government, non-government and private sectors at good position. Some of the students are working as a Post-doc students spread across the world under different affiliations and a few of them are a recipient of renowned fellowships as well. Besides these students, the faculty contribution and collaborations are praiseworthy.

Best Practices

NIGHT SKY OBSERVATION

Astronomy and Astrophysics is a very interesting subject for undergraduate students. This subject has been started in the year 1980. The Physics department of this college is the first department affiliated to Shivaji University, Kolhapur that started an Astrophysics and Astronomy subject at B Sc part II in 1980.

Students have many ideas in their minds such as Sun, Moon, Planets, Black hole, White draft, Big-Bang, Milky Way Galaxy etc. We introduced the history of Astronomy development and fundamental of Astrophysics in the syllabus. Also we introduced the significance of astronomy in our everyday life and promoted as a science like basic knowledge of astronomy, the instruments for astronomical observation and the methods for astrophysics research

We tried our best to show the space world and the corresponding pictures of some objects. The students paid a lot of attention in the class and were curious to ask questions. Some of our former students who studied astronomy and astrophysics in the classes are now leading to organizes Night Sky Observations for school students, college students and society as well.

Due to this subject some of our students has been completed minor research projects sanctioned by ISRO. Also we organized interesting lectures regarding astronomy and astrophysics for undergraduate students.

Department of Physics organized ‘Night Sky Observation’ at every year in the month of January/February at different places like Panhala, Girgaon(Karveer), Gagnbawada, Sakharpa etc. which are at high altitude near Kolhapur city. For this activity, we invite experts from different institute like KIT, Kolhapur, IUCCA Pune and some professors from colleges. We shows participants all the planets and their satellites, constellations, artificial satellite , wave trains and galaxies like Andromeda near our solar system using 10 inch telescope. Also we gave all information related to our solar system, Galaxies, black holes etc. during this activity. We include all from school to college level students and local people to join this activity. Also we organize the workshops on the theme of Astronomy, science and Society to create awareness regarding Astronomy and Space Science among the students.

To encourage students about space science frequently we organized Telescope Making Workshop in our college campus which is open to all members.
