Brief History of the Department


The great visionary and educational leader of the Prince Shivaji Maratha Boarding and The New College, Hon’ble Chairman Shri. D.B.Patil and his futuristic eyesight have given birth to the new commercial wing in the campus of education well known as “Department of Commerce” in June 1971. The motto of this college is “Work is Worship”. The prime object behind this commerce education is to develop the commercial knowledge and hidden skills of the students for the development of the self and the nation. Under this department B.Com course is specifically offered in three stages. This course consists of the knowledge of the marketing, accounting and costing, economics, insurance, management, industrial management etc. From 2008-2009, the course structure is revised and developed into semester pattern. Recently National Education Policy 2020 is introduced by UGC with the aim of skill development of students. It helps in the development of Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) by 2030 as well as it provides employment opportunities to the skilled students. The department has initiated M.Com Course with specialization of Advanced Accountancy and Advanced Costing in 2021-22. As a growing department, about 150 students are perusing post graduate degree. This is one of the departments in the college campus which is having the strength of about 900 students in 2024. Out of which 80% students are girls.
Apart from this, the department has started Career Oriented courses like GST Tally Accounting and Stock Market Courses for inculcating the skilled knowledge amongst students of commerce. Till today, this department has organized campus interviews of TCS, Infosys, ICICI etc. companies for better employment opportunities.
