Brief History of the Department


In the year June 1975, the conception of the Department of Physics took place under the able leadership of Prin..Dr. R. K. Kanabarkar sir. The first head of the department was Dr. B. P. Sabale  who commenced the basic Bachelor degree program in Physics  for the remote as well as city area students surrounded by the college.. The sole intention was to cater to the need for graduation in Physics for academic as well as industrial purpose. Later on Dr B. P. Sable became the Registrar of the Shiva University Kolhapur. After that the department has been successfully led by legends like Dr. J. K. Nandgawe, Dr. R. R. Hadgal, Dr. P. K. Patil , Dr. R. S. Patil and Dr. M. R. Shedam . Dr. P. K. Patil became the Principal of the ‘The New College, Kolhapur from 2010 to 2012. Still most of the professors are the authors of many text books published by reputed publishing houses like ‘Phadake’ and ‘Nirali Publications as per curriculum designed by the Shivaji University, Kolhapur.
In June 1980, the Astronomy and Astrophysics subject has been started under the able headship of Dr. J. K. Nandgawe sir. The department of Physics is the first department that started this subject among all colleges affiliated to Shivaji University, Kolhapur. In June 2021, Master Degree Program has been started in Physics with a specialization ‘Material Science’ under the able headship of Dr. P. D. Kamble. Since then several areas of Materials Science have been researched and taught in the department.
Apart from the academic program, research culture has been developed in the department since 2019. One of the students has been awarded his Ph. D degree from this department and eight students are working their Ph. D. work. The faculty from the department has published many research papers in Scopus indexed journals with high impact factor.
As of today, a large number of students are working in various government, non-government and private sectors at good position. Some of the students are working as a Post-doc students spread across the world under different affiliations and a few of them are a recipient of renowned fellowships as well. Besides these students, the faculty contribution and collaborations are praiseworthy.


To introduce and popularize the study of physics by the way of graduate studies and to develop new generation with competency in the field of physics.


To enable the student to acquire the knowledge of principles, techniques and processes in physics.
